Religious Education Across these key learning areas, students are encouraged to reflect on their learning. The Literacy and Numeracy levels of all children are closely monitored and both individual and group strategies are used with targeted students for extension and /or remediation. The Reading Recovery teacher monitors and assists students in Year One who are experiencing difficulty in Literacy. Gifted and Talented students are catered for in many ways, including differentiated curriculum, small withdrawal groups and opportunities to access outside competitions and extension groups. We are investigating the special literacy needs of boys and have several strategies in place. The school is well equipped with computers and students have supervised access to some internet sites through myinternet. Children are afforded many opportunities to develop their gifts and talents through participation in extra-curricula activities such as Chess, Inter-school Sport, the School Band, the School Choir and in the Creative Arts. The Religious Education Curriculum is known as To Know, Worship and Love. Class programs are developed from this document, and provide for the particular needs of students. Each unit is developed using a variety of strategies based on the children's Life Experience, Scripture, Church Tradition, Celebration and Lived Response. English is the key learning area where students develop knowledge, skills and positive attitudes so that they can use the English language effectively. Talking, listening, reading and writing are integrated within the content and context of all Key Learning Areas. Emphasis is placed on language as a resource for making meaning in real-life situations. Children learn how to interact productively with their peers, to speak confidently and fluently, to listen strategically, to read with comprehension, and to write well structured, coherent sentences. Students will also create and interpret a range of literary, factual and media texts, including text structures and grammatical features. Through participation in mathematical activities, students are encouraged to develop interest, confidence and competence so that they can become lifelong learners of Mathematics. Students are involved in analysing and solving problems in the areas of space, measurement and number. They also study patterns and relationships and emphasis is placed on mathematics as a means of communication. Teaching is based on the Process Approach to Mathematics, with the provision of open-ended tasks.
HSIE is the Key Learning Area in which students develop knowledge, understandings, skills, and values and attitudes about the interactions of people with one another and with the social, cultural and physical environments as they attempt to meet their needs. This comes about through the children's exposure to the world and its people through studies of the following four strands: Change and Continuity; Cultures; Environments; Social Systems and Structures. Science and Technology provides opportunities for students to learn about natural and made environments by engaging in scientific and technological activity. Science and Technology involves students in investigating, designing and making, and using technology. The Creative Arts key learning area includes the art forms of dance, drama, visual arts and music. Learning in these art forms provide opportunities for students to develop their abilities to make works and appraise their own works and the works of others. As the children are nurtured and encouraged to express themselves, the uniqueness and individuality of their work is respected at all times.
This Key Learning Area encompasses Personal Development, Health and Physical Education. This key learning area helps students develop self esteem, social responsibility, personal fitness and the ability to make informed decisions about health and lifestyle. |
